Consultation has concluded

The outcomes of the community consultation were reported to the Randwick Traffic Committee on 10 May 2022. At the meeting, it was decided to proceed with option 3 - kerb buildouts at the Rainbow and Ellen Street intersection. View the design for option 3 here and the ramp design here. Construction is expected to commence in June 2022.

Randwick City Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed pedestrian facility on Rainbow Street, near Ellen Street, Randwick.

Our Transport Engineers have designed three options for the proposed facility, all of which aim to improve safety for pedestrians and slow traffic along Rainbow Street.

The upgrade is being funded by the Federal Stimulus Road Safety Program School Zones project, and is one of 29 locations across Randwick City being upgraded or improved near to, or along walking routes to local schools. Whilst these upgrades are focused along walking routes to school, all members of our community who walk our city will benefit.

We invite you to view the three options to consider the impact each option will have on improving road safety and on the surrounding area, and share your thoughts with us.

Please note that all designs are in concept stage and some small changes might occur during the detailed design stage prior to construction.

OPTION 1: Installation of a pedestrian refuge island
VIEW THE DESIGN
  • Pedestrian refuge island allows a two-stage crossing for pedestrians
  • Creates a safe ‘waiting’ area for pedestrians in the middle of the road
  • Proposed line markings and refuge island slows traffic
  • Loss of 10 parking spaces; approx. 6 parking spaces lost eastbound and 4 parking spaces lost westbound
  • New kerb ramps both sides of Rainbow St connecting to existing footpaths and providing wheelchair and pram access - click here to view
OPTION 2: Installation of kerb buildouts aligned with Bangor Park
VIEW THE DESIGN
  • Kerb nib buildouts from the new ramps reduce the length of road pedestrians need to cross
  • Kerb nib buildouts reduce the width of the road and slow traffic travelling through a pinch-point
  • Pedestrians required to cross Rainbow Street without stopping (no refuge like in option 1)
  • Loss of 3 parking spaces; approx. 1 parking space lost eastbound and 2 parking spaces lost westbound
  • New kerb ramps both sides of Rainbow St connecting to existing footpaths and providing wheelchair and pram access - click here to view
  • New plantings incorporated in the kerb buildout
OPTION 3: Installation of kerb buildouts Rainbow and Ellen St intersection
VIEW THE DESIGN
  • Same as option 2, but located closer to the intersection of Rainbow and Ellen Streets
  • Loss of approx. 1 parking space eastbound
