Randwick City Council will build a new
community centre in Kensington on the site of the former Kensington Bowling
Club, Randwick Mayor Scott Nash announced today.
Randwick Council resolved at its
meeting on Tuesday 22 July 2014, to proceed with the new community centre which
will include rooms for hire, onsite parking, an outdoor gym, half basketball
court, additional landscaping and footpath works on Edward Avenue.
Council also resolved to explore
alternative locations for small-sided soccer who will be relocated from the
site once works commence.
More than 700 people provided feedback
on the proposal during Council’s community consultation process earlier this
year.
Randwick Mayor Scott Nash said the
community centre will play an important role in the community.
“This is much needed community space
for the densely populated area of Kensington,” Mayor Nash said.
“The community centre will help
reinvigorate Kensington Park following the unfortunate demise of the Bowling
Club in 2013. I feel we’ve struck a good balance between protecting the amenity
of nearby residents and providing a quality community facility that will
service everyone – young and old,” Mayor Nash said.
Council will now develop detailed
designs for the community centre and lodge a Development Application for the
project. Construction will likely occur in 2015, subject to approval.
