Background information

Randwick Junction has been the centre of commercial activity in Randwick since the establishment of the suburb in the mid nineteenth century, and has retained much of its heritage character, while remaining an important transport hub. The centre has a significant local residential population and workforce, catering to over 46,000 residents and workers within a 1km radius.

The planning framework for Randwick Junction was last reviewed in the mid 1990’s. Key trends and drivers impacting the town centre include the introduction of light rail in 2019, changing demands for retail and commercial uses and services in the area, and continuing growth in the adjoining Hospital and University precincts. It is now time for Council to investigate the future needs of the town centre, to ensure our planning framework is relevant and up to date, and provides for a vibrant and attractive place for people to work, shop and visit.

Issues paper

As a first step in the review process, Council has prepared the Randwick Junction Issues Paper which provides an updated evidence base, including a land use study, development research, a site analysis, and economic, retail and demographic research. It also includes the results of a Heritage Study, which has reviewed the heritage significance of the centre, its heritage items and contributory buildings.

The Issues Paper identifies key issues and opportunities to investigate in planning for the ongoing and future long term success of Randwick Junction.

It responds to key project drivers, including:
1. Relevant state and local planning directions
2. The impact of introducing light rail to Randwick
3. Economic, retail and social trends

Randwick Junction Town Centre Public Domain Strategy

A key recommendation identified in the Randwick Junction Town Centre Issues Paper is to prepare a comprehensive public domain strategy for the centre.

This public domain strategy will identify specific actions to:

· improve the appearance, attractiveness and usability of streets within the town centre;

· respect and enhance its positive character elements and features;

· provide a safe and accessible public domain;

· balance the needs of road users and pedestrians; and

· consider the longer term impacts with the introduction of light rail.

The public domain strategy will form an important component of the overarching strategy for the town centre and its your feedback that will help develop this strategy.
