Why has Council drafted a new Urban Forest Policy?

Council is combining three existing tree policies to create a more consistent and streamlined approach to tree management across Randwick City. The three policies are:

    1. Urban Forest Policy (September 2007)
    2. Tree Policy (March 1993)
    3. Significant Street Tree Removals – Public Notification Policy (May 2004)

What will happen to the former tree policies?

Once the new policy is adopted, the former tree management policies will be revoked.

How is this different to tree controls in the Development Control Plan (DCP)?

Our DCP aligns with the State Environmental Planning Policy (Biodiversity and Conservation) 2021, which outlines when consent is required to prune or remove trees or vegetation. The DCP also lists additional tree works that need Council approval. In contrast, the Urban Forest Policy provides a broader framework to enhance and protect the tree canopy across Randwick City.

When will the other documents that form the Urban Forest Management Framework be drafted and put on public exhibition?

We are aiming to have our Significant Tree Register on public exhibition by the end of 2025. The other documents that are part of the Urban Forest Strategy will be on public exhibition by mid-2026.
