Consultation has concluded

The new Waratah Avenue Plaza is now open! The plaza features terraced seating, tables, new trees and garden beds, and accessible pathways for prams and wheelchairs.  Click here for more information.

Waratah Avenue is set to become a new urban plaza in the heart of Randwick Junction. The plaza will become a civic space with the closure of Waratah Avenue to vehicles between Belmore Road and Arthur Lane.

The plaza concept has been developed incorporating feedback from community consultations conducted during March and April this year. The concept design is now available for comment.

View the concept plan here.

Key highlights of the plaza concept design include:

• Closure of Waratah Avenue between Belmore Road and Arthur Lane (access to Arthur Lane and driveway to residential car parks will be retained)

• 800 sqm of high-quality landscaped space for community use that transforms the existing road with a series of stepped outdoor areas.

• Improved access for people walking and cycling to Belmore Road, including an accessible walkway through the heart of the plaza

• Opportunity for public art

• Reduction of car parking spaces, which will be offset by additional car spaces along Belmore Road

• High quality paving and materials including shelter and public seating

• Retention of existing mature fig trees, complemented with new street trees and garden beds

• Cycle access provided between Waratah Avenue and Belmore Road

• A series of flat spaces for gathering outdoor and casual dining
