Managing long-term truck, boat and trailer parking on Darley Road

A number of residents have raised concerns with Council about trucks, vans, boats and other trailers being parked for long periods on the northern (Centennial Park) side of Darley Road.

As there are no parking sign posted restrictions along the road, some residents are concerned that the long-term storage of these types of vehicles by non-locals is making it harder for local residents and visitors to park.

If a vehicle is longer than 7.5m or heavier than 4.5 tonnes it is prohibited from parking on residential streets for more than one hour. However the majority of the trucks, boats and trailers currently parking on Darley Road are smaller vehicles and as such are legally allowed to park.

As there are no road rules or laws that provide Council with the ability to directly manage this impact, we have to be a little creative with parking restrictions to help residents.

We are seeking feedback from residents about implementing the following parking control along the northern side of Darley Road for a six month trial period:

4 hour parking, 1pm-6pm, Wednesdays only

This strategy retains much flexibility for local residents and visitors, while making it inconvenient for other people to “store” their vehicles and trailers for long periods on the northern side of your street.
Benefits
Challenges
Flexibility for local residents.
Inconvenient for anybody else seeking to park their vehicles for periods of one week or more as they risk being fined on Wednesday.
Successfully used in other areas to discourage trucks and boat parking. (eg Burnie St, Clovelly).
Residential vehicles parked on a Wednesday between 1pm and 6pm, for four hours or more, may also risk being fined. This means residents would have to move their vehicles or park them elsewhere during these times.

Trial Period for 6 months

If the community feedback indicates support for these parking restrictions they would be introduced for a trial period of six (6) months. At the end of this period the Council would assess if the trial was effective in addressing the long term parking of trucks, trailers, etc. on the north side of your street.

For us, success is the relocation of trucks, trailers, boats and caravans away from your street. If the parking strategy introduced is NOT successful, we will consider other options.

Residents' views are extremely important to us and will strongly guide our decision regarding the implementation of a trial. Whether you support a trial, or not, please complete the online survey to ensure that we know what you think of the proposal.

The consultation closes on Thursday 18 April, 2019.

If you are unable to access the online survey or have any questions, please contact Council's Transport Engineer, Alexander Lin, directly on 9093 6867 and he will assist you. Also, please feel free to call him if you have any questions.
