Consultation has concluded

Randwick City Council has developed a draft Active Transport Strategy and draft Walking and Cycling Plan to make it easier for people to move around our city on foot or by bike by providing safe, connected, and accessible paths for people of all ages and abilities.

Did you know that one third of people living in Randwick City can’t drive due to age or disability (ABS 2021) and one third of all trips in our LGA are by walking or riding (Household Travel Survey 2021/22)? This makes it vitally important that we provide easy, comfortable, safe walking and riding connections.

Draft Active Transport Strategy

The draft strategy has developed six outcomes, each with a range of strategic approaches and priority actions for active transport.

The strategic approaches will guide the planning, delivery and maintenance of walking and cycling infrastructure and initiatives.

Draft Walking and Cycling Plan

Included in the draft Walking and Cycling Plan are proposed Walking Improvement Areas and the proposed Cycling Network.

The Walking Improvement Areas designates nine areas for streetscape enhancements. These areas include our vibrant shopping districts and are aimed at facilitating easy access to nearby schools and public transport.

The Cycling Network builds on our previous plans and the NSW Government’s Strategic Cycling Corridors introduced in 2022. We have identified 15 cycling routes to safely connect our key destinations with the current cycling network.

    Making it easier to walk and ride in Randwick.

    We’re committed to making Randwick City a great place to walk and ride for people of all ages and abilities. Our new Active Transport Strategy will make walking and riding the easiest option for short trips.

    The Randwick Integrated Transport Strategy set targets for 2031 to increase active transport mode share to 35 per cent and cut road casualties by half. To achieve these goals, the Active Transport Strategy will identify priorities for the next 15 years for Council.

    Why do we need an Active Transport Strategy?

    52% of all trips in Randwick LGA include sustainable transport - walking, public transport and cycling.

    Walking is an essential part of our everyday lives and a part of almost every journey. There are more walking trips to get to public transport than walking-only trips in Randwick. So walking access to public transport needs to be a top priority. We also want to enable kids to get to school, friend’s houses and local parks easily and safety.

    That’s why our new Strategy will ensure people walking come first, making Randwick a more enjoyable, productive and healthy place to live.

    The average trip in Randwick is 3.98 kilometres in distance – which is less than 15 mins by bike. Around 70% of adults are interested in cycling but are concerned about safe places to ride (TfNSW, 2013). The Strategy will identify ways to make riding a bike safer, easier and more fun.

    We aim to make Randwick a place for people by connecting existing and new walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure to be comfortable and enjoyable.

    The first step to improve our walking and cycling infrastructure is to understand current issues. Help us by sharing your experiences, and help shape the way we move around our city!
