Arts and Culture Study

In September and October 2019, we consulted with the community to find out how we can better support the arts, and what you think about Randwick City Council’s current approach to arts and culture, and how this could be improved.

Community feedback was used to help develop the Arts and Culture Study. Read the Arts and Culture Study here.

The community consultation included a survey to find out what arts and culture in Randwick City means to our community.

More than 370 people completed the survey and provided the following insights:

  • Overall support for more arts and cultural activities across the city, especially public art, music, dance and theatre performances/concerts
  • Support for creating more spaces for art and culture practice, including performance venues, museums and galleries, and studios
  • Council’s small and large scale community events are considered to be vibrant and diverse
  • Public art is neither dynamic nor diverse, and we lack a good range of museums and galleries.

Overall, most respondents believe that arts and cultural activities are very important in Randwick City, but Randwick Council does not do enough to support this industry in our community.

The Arts and Culture study highlighted that 2.6% of Randwick City's population is employed in the arts and recreation services category (higher than the Greater Sydney average of 1.7%), but most travel outside of Randwick City to work - which represents a loss of cultural capital.

Council owns a number of properties that present opportunities to create cultural precincts. These include:

  • The Newmarket Stable building in Randwick
  • Historic Blenheim House in Randwick
  • Randwick Literary Institute
