Consultation has concluded

Project update: Construction on the new pocket park is due to commence January 2024 and be complete by April 2024. You can find out more about the project by visiting Council's website here.

Following stage 2 community consultation, an updated concept plan was reported to Council for approval on Tuesday 27 September 2022. You can read the Council report here (see page145) or the Consultation Outcomes Report here

A number of elements from the initial design were changed based on community feedback, including:

  • The bike lane has been removed following safety concerns
  • Vines will be planted at the base of the shade canopies and trained to grow onto the structures
  • More trees will be planted to provide natural forms of shade.
  • The pocket park will be lit with compliant lighting to deter disruptive activity from taking place, and will cast light downwards so it won't shine into adjacent property windows.
  • The electrical substation will not be relocated, and will remain in its current location

You can read more about how Council has responded to community feedback in the Council report.

Community consultation:

Randwick City Council is creating a new pocket park on the corner of Clovelly and Carrington Road, Randwick.

After round 1 consultation with community and local businesses we have developed a concept design for the intersection at Clovelly and Carrington Roads.

You told us it was important that we create a pedestrian-friendly experience while minimising impacts on traffic flows, bus routes, and on-street parking. Your comments have helped us develop a concept design that includes a pocket park with a village atmosphere and streetscape improvements that create a green urban oasis.

Where is it?

The pocket park will be created in the existing median at the intersection of Clovelly and Carrington Roads. The existing slip lane road will be reclaimed to create a public space for the community and the parking spaces will be relocated ensuring there is no net loss in parking at the intersection.

Project highlights:

The proposed key features of the draft concept design involve:

  • Green pocket park to create a village atmosphere
  • Increase in trees and greenery across the whole intersection
  • Seating encouraging passers by to stop, relax and connect with nature
  • An informal gathering space for the local community to enjoy
  • A multipurpose deck area that can function as a versatile community space
  • Pleasant night time safety and decorative lighting
  • Strategic repositioning of parking to ensure easy access to local businesses
  • Greater separation between pedestrian and cars to increase safety

As part of the design process, traffic surveys were completed between 7:00am and 10:00am, and between 2.30pm and 6:00pm. The AM and PM peak hours were found to occur between 7:45am to 8:45am and 5:00pm to 6:00pm.

The study found that the removal of the slip lane does not significantly impact the overall operation of the Clovelly Road / Carrington Road intersection in both AM and PM peaks and the intersection will continue to operate satisfactorily.

This project is being delivered in partnership with the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program.
