Consultation has concluded.

Final plans and construction of the Clovelly Road and Burnie Street pocket park will proceed in the 2024-25 financial year. Councillors endorsed the plan to build the new park at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 25 June 2024. To compensate for the 10 parking spots removed for the park, 20 new parking spots will be created on Burnie Street.

Project Update 19 June 2024: The outcome of the stage 2 community consultation is being reported at the Ordinary Council Meeting, Tuesday 25 June 2024.

Feedback on the draft concept design for the project was divided. Some community members welcomed the idea of additional green space and improvements to pedestrian safety, while others valued the retention of car spaces and were concerned about the impact that a loss of parking would have on local businesses.

In response to the feedback, Council has proposed converting a section of parking on Burnie Street from parallel to 90-degree parking, resulting in a net increase of 10 spaces (a total of 20 spaces). This additional angle parking would offset the loss of parking spaces proposed in the original concept design and help to calm traffic speeds.

The report to the Council recommends that the project progress to a detailed design of an updated pocket park, incorporating community feedback and new angle parking along Burnie Street, and proceed to construction.

Stage 2 community consultation:

After round 1 consultation with community and local businesses, Randwick City Council has developed a concept design for the intersection at Clovelly Road and Burnie Street, Clovelly.

Feedback from the community told us it was important that we create a pedestrian-friendly community space, that provides a green refuge from heat and included an element of fun and interaction. Community feedback helped us develop a concept design that provides a cool, green space for people to come together over a coffee or a cold drink, and streetscape improvements that increase safety and deliver a great pedestrian experience at this strip of shops.

Where is it?

This new green public space is proposed for the existing median at the intersection of Clovelly Road and Burnie Street. The draft concept design reclaims the existing slip lane to create a people focused experience for local residents and neighbouring businesses.

Project highlights

The proposed key features of the draft concept design involve:

  • Dense planting and increased tree canopy to create a green oasis at Burnie St shops
  • Interactive stepping stones, totems and planting to create a sense of adventure
  • Seating to encourage passers-by to stop, relax and take a break
  • An informal gathering space for the local community to enjoy
  • A tiered stair case to create levels and separation from Clovelly Rd
  • Greater separation between pedestrians and cars to increase safety
  • Increased traffic calming and pedestrian crossings to cross both Burnie St and Clovelly Rd safely
