What is the current condition of the hall?

The Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall is currently in poor condition, with a deteriorating building envelope, an unwelcoming street presence and poor signage. High fencing protects the property from malicious damage but also isolates the site from the surrounding reserve and landscape.

What are the current features of the hall?

The current hall has a capacity of approximately 60 people and the facility includes:

    • Flexible hall
    • Toilets
    • Kitchen
    • Storage

    Who currently hires the hall?

The current regular hirers of the hall have been identified as:

    • Taekwondo group
    • Children’s indoor soccer
    • Children’s dance school

The hall is also available for one off hire for children’s parties, community meetings etc.

Why are we planning the project?

The project has been allocated funding in the 20/21 Capital Works Budget through the Our Community Our Future program to demolish the existing hall and build a new community facility. The existing hall does not meet current standards of community expectations and comfort.

What will the new facility look like?

The new facility will be in approximately the same location as the existing hall. The design and materials of the new facility will be considered to fit in with the character of the local area. The new design will include further design consideration e.g. planting and landscaping to improve the sites interaction and response to the streetscape and surrounds.

What will you do with the open space next to the hall?

The site is classified as a Pocket Park and falls under the Pocket Plan Generic Plan of Management (PoM). This PoM governs the development and management of the site. We will also look at ideas for this open space as part of the project.
