Consultation has concluded.

The new permanent plaza on McKeon Street was officially opened on Saturday 23 September 2023.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting, 18 April 2023, Council approved the recommendation to make the McKeon Street Plaza permanent! The new plaza will be designed to provide permanent infrastructure, updated signage, new planting and garden beds, opportunity for tree planting for shade, bike racks, improved accessibility and floor treatments. Council will also invest in an entertainment program for 12 months.

We are seeking your feedback on the McKeon Street Plaza. Have you visited the temporary plaza? What have you enjoyed? Do you support the plaza being made permanent?

The McKeon Street Plaza was launched in October 2022 to reimagine how we use our streets, provide more outdoor space for the community, and improve access to local businesses over the busy summer period.

The weekends have been jam packed with live music and entertainment, fresh food markets, yoga and the sunset silent cinema. Click here to view the remaining weekend events at McKeon Street.

Feedback open: 9 March to 9am, 6 April 2023.

Thank you to everyone who provided their ideas for the McKeon Street activation. You can read the outcomes of the consultation here and follow the project here.

Based on what we heard, we will develop a concept design that encourages family friendly entertainment by local artists, creates space for outdoor dining and works with the existing local businesses. We will also develop a traffic management plan and undertake traffic counts before and during the project to measure the impact of the McKeon Street closure on surrounding streets.

Randwick Council is planning to create a new public plaza on McKeon Street at Maroubra Beach.

The new space will be created by closing McKeon Street to traffic between Marine Parade and Fenton Avenue for a six month trial period to provide more space for you to meet, shop, dine or relax opposite the beach.

We are seeking your ideas on what this new space could look like - would you like new furniture for outdoor dining, landscaping, public art or a program of entertainment?

The project is due to commence in September 2022. Depending on feedback and future funding there is the potential to keep the activation permanently. This is an opportunity to trial turning a street mostly used by cars into a space for people at a beachside location.

Vehicle access for residents in the adjacent apartments and essential delivery trucks will remain - see map. Council is exploring parking changes in nearby streets to maintain or increase the availability of nearby on-street parking.

The project is being funded by the NSW Government Shared Spaces initiative and is aligned with Randwick City's Economic Development Strategy; with the aim of strengthening our economy, enabling community prosperity, and creating vibrant places for people to connect.
