Council is planning to improve lighting at Nagle Park to continue supporting organised sport and general park use.

During the winter sports seasons in 2023 and 2024, Council has been trialling extended lighting in the park to support park users and dog walkers using the dedicated off-leash areas of the park.

The trial has involved increasing the number of nights the park is lit from three nights to five.

We’ve received positive feedback from park users, and we’re now proposing the following changes:

  • Extend sports field lighting permanently
We propose to amend the current Development Application (DA) to allow lights and field use five nights a week until 9pm during the winter sports season. Right now, it’s only allowed three nights a week until 8.30pm.

  • Install separate lighting for dog walking
We're also proposing to install four new light poles, each 8 metres high, in the northern part of the park to improve safety for dog walkers. These lights would operate independently from the sports field lights and run five nights a week until 9pm also during the winter sports season.

See map for the proposed location.

Why are we proposing this?

The trial showed that lots of people want to use the park in the evenings – both for sport and dog walking. But we also heard concerns about safety on the sports fields, especially due to holes dug by dogs or waste left behind. Dogs are prohibited from the sports field, so installation of dedicated lighting in the dog off-leash areas will make this area safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
