Randwick City Council is building a new pump park to provide a dedicated space for BMX riding, mountain biking, skateboarding, and scootering.
Apump track is a circuit of mounds and banked turns where riders use a pumping motion, not pedalling, to maintain speed - improving balance and coordination. It’s a fun, inclusive space for all skill levels.
As adventure sports grow in popularity, this project - part of our Open Space and Recreation Strategy- will create a purpose-built facility to support outdoor recreation while enhancing community spaces.
We are seeking feedback on two possible locations in Malabar:
After reviewing several potential sites across the Randwick LGA, Council initially endorsed Cromwell Park North due to its size and parking availability. However, early community feedback raised concerns about potential traffic congestion, safety, and amenities.
In response, residents suggested also considering Pioneers Park (north of the AFL fields).
Council initially ruled out Pioneers Park because it is a designated dog off-leash area. If Pioneers Park is selected, the off-leash area would be relocated.
Comparing the two locations
Cromwell Park:
Features
Challenges
Large, shady park
Undulating and interesting terrain for a bike park
Parking available on Franklin St
Increased visitation could increase traffic congestion
No immediate toilet facilities
Space limitations due to varied land ownership
Limited passive surveillance due to trees
Pioneers Park:
Features
Challenges
Easy access from Anzac Parade and shared path
Adjacent car park, toilets and water bubblers
Good passive surveillance
Limited parking when sports field in use
Lacks shade and trees
Existing dog off-leash park would have to be relocated
Tell us what you think
We are seeking community feedback on whether the pump park should be built at Cromwell Park North or Pioneers Park.
We also want your input on the existing off-leash dog area at Pioneers Park, which would need to be relocated if this site is chosen.
Or you can send your comments with the subject “Pump Park” to council@randwick.nsw.gov.au or to 30 Frances Street, Randwick 2031.
