Randwick Council is progressing design plans for the new pocket park and pedestrian safety upgrades on Burnie Street in Clovelly, and we’d like your feedback before moving to the next stage. The proposal includes parking changes with a net increase of 5 to 10 spaces and new timed spaces.

Over the past few years, Council has worked closely with the Clovelly community to design a new pocket park at the corner of Clovelly Road and Burnie Street. The concept design, endorsed by Council in June 2024, includes new landscaping, seating, and playful elements to create a green and welcoming space. It also improves pedestrian safety through traffic calming, new crossings and clearer separation between pedestrians and vehicles.

During earlier consultations, many residents supported the plan but raised concerns about the loss of on-street parking.

In response, Council commissioned an independent traffic assessment to find ways to offset the loss of parking. As a result, we’re proposing to convert a section of Burnie Street from parallel to 90-degree parking, which would create approximately 15 to 20 new spaces.

These additional spaces would offset those removed to make way for the new pocket park, resulting in a net increase of 5 to 10 parking spaces overall.

Changing to 90-degree parking would narrow the travel lane, which, along with the proposed raised pedestrian crossing, is expected to help slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety. A maximum of five timed parking spaces is also proposed on Burnie Street between Clifton Road and Clovelly Road to encourage turnover and help residents access local shops.
