Coral Sea Park Playground Upgrade
Consultation has concluded
The new playground was officially opened on 3 August 2022 - see our news story on the playground opening.
Randwick City Council is upgrading the playground at Coral Sea Park, Maroubra, to create a new inclusive play space where local children of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can play.
The upgrade is being funded by a NSW Government grant under the Everyone Can Play program, with Randwick Council matching the funding, dollar for dollar.
HOW DID WE CONSULT?
Stage 1: We asked the community to share their ideas for the new playground design. Stage 2: We exhibited the draft concept plan for community feedback.
What we heard - stage 1:
Parents and carers want a playground with more challenging equipment for older kids to move and climb, as well as safe areas for little ones to play, all in a more natural setting. There is strong support for more inclusive play equipment, shade, and seating.
What we designed - stage 2:
We designed a playground with large multi-play equipment for bigger kids, and a log seesaw and toddler slide located next to a grassed area where parents and carers can relax while they supervise. There is also an inground wheelchair accessible carousel and basket swing. Stepping stones set amongst low plantings and more shade trees are proposed, to encourage nature play and add to the bush-style setting.
Molly's Park, the garden memorial located within the playground, will have new plantings and seating. View the concept plan.
Final design:
Based on community feedback, the concept plan was amended and the final design now includes opportunities for bigger kids to slide and swing, more sensory play for toddlers, and more seating. View the final plan.
Consultation period: Stage 2 - 19 May to 15 June 2021.
