Consultation has concluded

The new playground was officially opened on 3 August 2022 - see our news story on the playground opening.

Randwick City Council is upgrading the playground at Coral Sea Park, Maroubra, to create a new inclusive play space where local children of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can play.

The upgrade is being funded by a NSW Government grant under the Everyone Can Play program, with Randwick Council matching the funding, dollar for dollar.

HOW DID WE CONSULT?

Stage 1: We asked the community to share their ideas for the new playground design. Stage 2: We exhibited the draft concept plan for community feedback.

What we heard - stage 1:

Parents and carers want a playground with more challenging equipment for older kids to move and climb, as well as safe areas for little ones to play, all in a more natural setting. There is strong support for more inclusive play equipment, shade, and seating.

What we designed - stage 2:

We designed a playground with large multi-play equipment for bigger kids, and a log seesaw and toddler slide located next to a grassed area where parents and carers can relax while they supervise. There is also an inground wheelchair accessible carousel and basket swing. Stepping stones set amongst low plantings and more shade trees are proposed, to encourage nature play and add to the bush-style setting.

Molly's Park, the garden memorial located within the playground, will have new plantings and seating. View the concept plan.

Final design:

Based on community feedback, the concept plan was amended and the final design now includes opportunities for bigger kids to slide and swing, more sensory play for toddlers, and more seating. View the final plan.

Consultation period: Stage 2 - 19 May to 15 June 2021.

    Dissappointed

We have been to this playground about 4 times. We would have gone there a lot more if the facilities were of the standard of playgrounds such as Chifley (a much larger site), Malabar and the Alby Smith memorial playground at Coogee. The playground looks run down and at times vandalised (fences, slides, swings etc.). It's good to see the fences have finally been repaired. Our then 2 year olds (now 3.5) would get out and run all over the place. We're so happy to see some investment in this playground with a wonderful park right next door.

Coral Sea Park and the Greening of Randwick

Randwick CC now shares the GSC ambition of a 40% canopy over its lands by 2030, to provide shade and hence lower temperatures in summer to playgrounds and footpaths leading to them. The footpaths (and cycleways) are designed as Green Links between parks/reserves, town/village centres, beaches and other recreation areas, to form the Randwick and Greater Sydney Green Grid. Over the past two years I have walked all over Randwick identifying possible Pedestrian Green Links, photographing every reserve playground. Coral Sea Park can be linked by routes to Cromwell Park (Malabar Beach), Heffron Park and the Randwick Environmental Park. It... Continue reading
