November 2024 Update: A proposal to lower speed limits to 40km and install traffic safety devices across the Kensington and Kingsford area will be put to community consultation in early 2025. The $7.25m proposal, funded by $6.25m from Transport for NSW’s Safer Roads Program and $1m from Council, is proposed to be rolled out in stages, pending feedback from the community. The plan proposes a range of devices including speed bumps, signalised intersections, pedestrian crossings and refuge islands to increase safety.

Kensington West Kingsford Local Area Traffic Management

Council is undertaking a Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) study of Kensington and West Kingsford.

LATM studies relate to the planning and management of road space within a local area with the objective of reducing traffic volumes and speeds in local streets, to increase amenity and improve safety and access for residents, especially pedestrians and bike riders.

Specifically, the Kensington West Kingsford LATM study aims to

    • Improve the safety of pedestrians, bike riders and other road users
    • Safely integrate pedestrian and bicycle facilities into new traffic calming treatments
    • Discourage the use of local roads for through traffic and promote the use of main road for such purposes
    • Maintain a good level of connectivity and accessibility for local road users
    • Encourage motorists in residential areas to adhere to appropriate speeds
    • Enhance the liveability of the area, via traffic management strategies, while ensuring appropriate traffic access for residents.

We want to hear of your experiences in moving around Kensington and West Kingsford, as a pedestrian, a public transport user, a bike rider or as a motorist.

You can share your experience by:

    • Dropping a pin on our map here
    • Sending your comments via Your Say Randwick here
    • Sending your comments headed "Kensington West Kingsford LATM" to council@randwick.nsw.gov.au or to 30 Frances Street, Randwick 2031

The LATM study will also be informed by current and historic traffic data, examination of existing traffic management arrangements and a review of previously proposed LATM treatments.

In 2013, Council initiated a LATM study for the Kensington West Kingsford area in response to community concerns regarding traffic issues. However, the study was paused due to the announcement of the Light Rail project. The findings from the initial consultation will be taken into consideration to compare the present situation with the conditions existing prior to the construction of the light rail.

Feedback open: 11 September to 9am 24 October 2023 (extended).
