Maroubra Road Intersection Upgrades

Randwick City Council has conducted a comprehensive study of Maroubra Road, from Bunnerong Road to Malabar Road. As a result, we are proposing a series of intersection upgrades with the aim of improving safety for people walking, riding and driving.

The intersection upgrades are based on feedback from the community, as well as data collected through traffic counts, intersection surveys, traffic modelling, crash data analysis and safety reviews.

It's important to note that the implementation of these upgrades will occur in stages and is dependent on community feedback, funding availability, and approval from Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW).

The intersections proposed for upgrade are:

1. Bunnerong Road / Heffron Road

  • Remove slip lane
  • Extend right turn lane onto Bunnerong Road

  • The removal of the slip lane on the northern side of Maroubra Road will enhance safety for pedestrians, improve traffic flow and simplify navigation. It will provide an opportunity to introduce urban design improvements like wider footpaths and landscaping
  • The proposed treatments also address the historical collision trend at the intersection of Bunnerong and Heffron Road, primarily associated with rear-end collisions, resulting in minor injuries
2. Royal Street / Hinkler Street
  • New traffic lights with pedestrian crossings
  • New turning lanes at traffic lights

  • The upgrade is designed to accommodate current and anticipated traffic needs. The improvements aim to enhance the safety of pedestrians, bike riders and drivers crossing through the intersection
  • This initiative will not only manage the traffic more effectively but also ensure greater safety for pedestrians
  • The proposed treatments also address the historical collision trend at the intersection of Royal Street and Hinkler Street, mainly associated with turning traffic to and from Royal Street, Hinkler Street which have resulted in moderate injuries
3. Hannan Street
  • New pedestrian crossings and refuges
  • Left turn only from side streets

  • This intersection upgrade will reduce motorist ambiguity and unregulated turning actions, enhancing road safety.
  • Additionally, it will repurpose road space by upgrading pedestrian infrastructure, ensuring a more accessible environment for local residents walking within this area.
  • The proposed treatments also address the historical collision trend at the intersection of Hannan Street and Maroubra Road, primarily associated with cross traffic, which have resulted in moderate injuries
4. Walsh Avenue / Bruce Bennetts Place
  • Remove slip lane and add new left turn lane
  • New shared zone

  • The intersection’s enhancement will facilitate better, safer, pedestrian connectivity. It will also provide a larger kerbside space and ensure a seamless transition between on-road and off-road amenities
  • This proposal is focused on creating an improved environment for all users
  • The proposed treatments also address the historical collision trend, involving pedestrians, at the intersection of Walsh Avenue and Bruce Bennetts Place. These crashes are primarily associated with cross traffic to and from Walsh Avenue
5. Anzac Parade
  • New left turn only lanes onto Anzac Parade
  • Investigate the implementation of a 40km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area between Hannan and Garden Streets

  • The corridor upgrade will enhance connectivity in the vicinity. It will also introduce speed control measures in zones with high pedestrian traffic, promoting a safer environment for all
  • The proposed treatments will also address the historical collision trend involving pedestrian at the intersection of Anzac Parade and Maroubra Road. These crashes are primarily right-through collisions from Maroubra Road to Anzac Parade, with most on the eastern carriageway
6. Garden Street
  • Upgrade traffic lights for longer pedestrian crossing times and new turning arrows
  • New right turn lanes onto Maroubra Road
  • Extend School Zone

  • The proposal will increase pedestrian safety by eliminating the need for filtered movements, which previously led to inefficient traffic flow. It will also expand the capacity of side streets leading up to the intersection, facilitating smoother traffic management.
  • The proposed treatments also address the historical collision trend at the intersection of Garden Street and Maroubra Road
7. Cooper Street / Mons Avenue (priority project)
  • New traffic lights at intersection with pedestrian crossings
  • New turning lanes

  • This initiative is considered vital for the protection of pedestrians – especially for local seniors who are negotiating the intersection
  • The proposed treatments also address the historical collision trend at the intersection of Cooper Street and Mons Avenue, primarily associated with turning traffic to and from Mons Avenue

8. Flower Street
  • Relocate and upgrade existing pedestrian crossing
  • install new roundabout
  • New raised pedestrian crossing on Flower Street
  • Install wider median and realign parking and travel lanes between Mons Avenue and Flower Street

  • The intersection upgrade is crucial for managing both vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow. The introduction of a roundabout will support the current pedestrian crossing infrastructure and contribute to a reduction in traffic speed in the vicinity
  • Furthermore, the inclusion of a median will not only improve the visual appeal of the streetscape but also reinforce the area’s unique character. Over time the landscaped median may address the sun-glare issue often occurring at this part of Maroubra Road
  • The proposed treatments also address the historical pedestrian involved collision trend at the intersection of Flower Street and Maroubra Road
9. Malabar Road
  • Upgrade traffic lights
  • Extend merge lane and widen slip lane
  • Improve footpath
