Randwick City Council is redeveloping the Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club (MSLSC) to deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that supports volunteer lifesaving, training, youth development and community connection for generations to come.
Maroubra SLSC is one of Australia’s founding surf clubs established in 1906. It provides volunteer patrols of Maroubra Beach complementing Council lifeguard services as well as surf sport and water safety education and training for the community – including children. The club currently has 1,410 members.
The proposed new building reflects more than 18 months of consultation with club members. It includes features that benefit both the club and the broader Maroubra community, including enhanced public seating, showers, beach access, and a forecourt barista window.
Over the past year, the design has been developed in close consultation with club members and is now on public exhibition.
What’s proposed?
A new, contemporary surf club that:
supports volunteer lifesaving operations with larger storage and better access
reflects the club’s cultural legacy while preparing for future needs
offers a large gym, upgraded amenities, and new member spaces
includes function and meeting rooms, a lounge, kitchen, bar, and outdoor terrace
uses natural ventilation, solar panels, and sustainable materials to boost environmental performance
includes improved amenities for volunteers, a publicly accessible barista window, landscaped seating, and weather-protected decks
Benefits for the whole community
strengthens safety and volunteer patrol services
provides inclusive public spaces and event facilities
delivers sustainability improvements in a coastal setting
respects Maroubra’s unique beach culture and community identity
Funding and construction timing
The redevelopment is being funded by all three levels of government. The total project is estimated to cost $15M of which $10.5M is being provided by Randwick Council, $3.5M from the Federal Government and $1M from the State Government. Subject to consultation, design refinements and future budget allocations, it is expected that construction could commence in 2027-28.
