Consultation concluded.

The Open Space and Recreation Strategy is one of Council's key informing strategies. The Informing Strategies are based on research and provide an important link between the vision and high level outcomes of the City Plan and the specific actions that will deliver these outcomes. You can read the final strategy here.

Community Consultation:

The Draft Open Space and Recreation Strategy is Randwick City Council’s plan to increase community access to quality parks, coastal areas, and sports and recreation opportunities. Good quality public open spaces improves physical and mental well-being and provides places to play, meet and socialise.

The strategy is a 10 year plan to help deliver Council’s longer term vision contained in our City Plan (Community Strategic Plan) through specific objectives and strategic approaches. The specific goals will be delivered as part of Council’s delivery program and annual operational plans and budgets.

Our overall objectives are to ensure every home in Randwick is within 800m of open space, and to maintain high satisfaction ratings for all our open spaces and any new open space or recreation facilities.

Specifically, we have set ourselves 39 strategic approaches to achieve our objectives. Some of these approaches include:

  • Creating public parks and plazas in the Kensington and Kingsford town centres.
  • Advocating for public access to the remaining Federal land at Malabar Headland.
  • Improving signage along the Coastal Walkway.
  • Developing a Playground Plan focusing on diversifying and expanding play spaces to include provision for all abilities and adventure play.
  • Completing the Coastal Walkway to create a continuous pedestrian link between Clovelly and Botany Bay.
  • Identifying temporary and/or permanent sites for a BMX track with jumps, or mountain bike course.
  • Investigate off-leash dog areas in South Coogee, Kensington and Kingsford.

HOW WAS THE STRATEGY DEVELOPED?

In 2020, Council consulted with the local community to learn more about how you spend your time outdoors and what you would like to see in the future. Using surveys, interactive mapping, drop in sessions, and workshops we received feedback from our local residents, sporting groups and peak sporting bodies.

The community consultation helped develop an Open Space and Recreation Needs Study, written to guide improvements to our parks, sporting facilities and open spaces, and assist in their future management. You can read more about the study and community consultation here.

CONSULTATION PERIOD: 1 TO 28 JUNE 2021.

From March to May 2020, we consulted with the community to find how you use our parks, reserves, beaches or sporting fields, what activities you do, and what infrastructure is needed to provide quality open space and recreation facilities.

More than 700 community, sporting groups and peak sporting bodies provided feedback, which has been incorporated in the Open Space and Recreation Needs Study. The Study will guide improvements to our parks, sporting facilities and open spaces, and assist in their future management.

Some key findings of the community consultation told us we need to:

    • Increase tree canopy and shade cover in parks, playgrounds, along the coast and active transport routes
    • Increase active transport links to support recreation, access and safety
    • Upgrade and provide more diverse play spaces for a range of ages and abilities
    • Continue to provide access to natural areas for connection to nature
    • Provide and plan for recreation with dogs

You can read more about the consultation in the Open Space and Recreation Needs Study.
