Council has developed new Public Art Guidelines to outline how public art is planned, approved, delivered and cared for across Randwick City.
The guidelines provide clear, practical direction for the full life cycle of public art, from early ideas and approvals through to installation and ongoing maintenance.
The draft guidelines:
- set out clear steps for delivering public art
- explain roles, responsibilities and processes
- provide guidance for murals and community-initiated projects
They focus on how public art is delivered, rather than what artworks are created or where they go.
Public art involves many people, including artists, local communities, property owners, developers and Council teams. We want to make sure the guidelines are:
- easy to understand and use
- transparent and fair
- supportive of high-quality public art outcomes
- helpful for people delivering projects independently
Your feedback will help refine the guidelines before they’re finalised and presented to Council for adoption.
What is public art?
Public art includes a wide range of creative works experienced in public places. It can take many forms, including murals, sculptures, installations, temporary works, light- or sound-based artworks, and works integrated into buildings or public spaces.
Public art can tell stories about place, reflect community identity, celebrate culture and creativity, create conversations, and make public spaces more engaging and distinctive.
Strategic alignment
The Public Art Guidelines support Council’s Arts and Culture Strategy, which aims to support a creative and culturally rich city that is innovative, inclusive and recognised nationally.
By setting clear and transparent processes, the Guidelines support high-quality artistic outcomes, respect Country, reflect local stories, and ensure public art contributes positively to Randwick’s streets and public spaces.
