Randwick Council is upgrading Snape Park to improve facilities for local sporting clubs and park users.

Following consultation in early 2025, Council has revised the project staging in direct response to local community feedback.

What we heard

In early 2025, Council sought feedback on the proposed Stage One indoor training facility. We received 364 survey responses and submissions.

Community feedback reflected a wide range of views, with levels of support varying significantly depending on proximity to the park. In particular, many nearby residents raised concerns about the proposed indoor training facility - especially its location, potential loss of open space, and traffic impacts.

Key themes from the feedback included:

  • Strong support for improved amenities, accessible public toilets, and better parking.
  • Mixed views on the indoor training facility
    • Support was highest among people who lived outside Maroubra or visited Snape Park from outside Randwick City
    • Nearby residents expressed significant concerns about the facility’s location and potential impacts.

You can read the full community consultation report here.

Revised staging

In response to this feedback, Council has revised the scope and staging of the Snape Park upgrade:

Stage One (we are here!) - Amenities building and car park: Funding previously allocated to the indoor training facility has been reallocated to deliver the new amenities and car park first.

Stage Two (future stage) - External cricket nets: New external cricket nets will be constructed north of their current location, as the existing nets will be removed in Stage Three to make way for the indoor training facility.

Stage Three (future stage) - Indoor training facility: To address community concerns, the indoor training centre has been relocated to the site of the existing cricket nets. This stage is planned for future delivery in approximately 2030, pending funding and further community consultation.

Additional Works: Angled on-street parking along Snape Street and Percival Street.

Amenities and car park concept design

As part of the revised staging, Council is now prioritising the delivery of a new amenities building and car park. This stage responds directly to strong community support for improved amenities, accessible public toilets, and better parking.

The proposed building will replace the current kiosk, change rooms, and amenities buildings which no longer meet current standards or community expectations. The new facility will support local sporting groups and all park users in one new consolidated building.

Key features of the proposed amenities building

Public facilities

  • Male and female public toilets easily accessible from the playground
  • A unisex accessible toilet

Sporting facilities

  • Two sets of home and away change rooms with showers and toilets, designed to support concurrent use by different teams or by men’s and women’s teams
  • Referee change room with shower and toilet facilities
  • Kiosk facing the sports field with storage
  • Club information and administration rooms
  • Storage for sporting equipment and Council maintenance

Safety and services

  • Cleaner’s room, bin store, and building services
  • Security features including CCTV, electronic access, and sensor lighting for after-hours safety

The undercover areas, car park, and public toilets will be open for everyone to use. The other areas, including change rooms and storage, will be used by sporting clubs who book the sports field.

Design and sustainability features

  • The new amenities building is designed to be durable, easy to maintain, and comfortable for everyday use.
  • The outside will be built with strong, long-lasting materials, while the inside will feature warm finishes that are easy to clean and maintain.

Natural light and ventilation

  • The building includes roof features that let in plenty of natural light and fresh air, helping reduce the need for artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation.
