Randwick City Council is planning to install permanent traffic calming devices along Yarra Road, Phillip Bay to continue to combat issues with speeding and hoon-behaviour along the road.

The proposed new traffic devices include:

  • Double barrier centreline with raised reflective markers near Elaroo Ave
  • Advanced warning signage
  • Speed humps
  • Mountable roundabout island at Canara Ave
  • No Stopping and No Parking zones
  • Centreline road markings
  • Central median island

The proposed works are part of Randwick City Council's and the NSW Police ongoing commitment to address the issue in the La Perouse and Phillip Bay area caused by so called ‘car hoons’.

In mid-2018, we installed a number of temporary speed control elements along Yarra Road including single lanes with multiple speed humps and a central median strip around the bend (near La Perouse Public School). This is in addition to new night time parking controls, larger speed humps in Kooringai Avenue, lockable gates at the Yarra Bay Sailing Club’s access road and CCTV cameras near the Sailing Club.

In June 2019 we surveyed Yarra Road residents to find out if the temporary speed control measures had resulted in improved motorist behaviour. Of those who responded, 70% felt the speed humps had been successful in improving motorist behaviour and 75% were in favour of installing the speed control measures permanently.
